Welp, this past weekend'sSNLwas, from where I was sitting, one of the worst I've ever seen.I realized how bad things were when I found myself feeling personally tense and embarrassed over the consistent lack of audience response throughout the show—as if the cast andJim Parsonswere all my kids, and I was watching them blow it in the elementary-school spring pageant.
So,there's definitely something nice about them together.I liked Jost's earnest thank-you up top,and I am naturally endeared to anyone who shows up for his first day on the job looking like he just got a haircut. Also,it's funny how even though Strong's been on the desk only a few months, having a newbie in the mix makes her look like an instant pro.
Speaking of "pro," I think if Jost's inaugural Update suffered from anything,it was a preponderance of giggling. That wasn't all his fault, nor was it Cecily's.我可以坦白一些事情吗?Ihatewhen Jay Pharoah cracks up during his own impressions. The Shaq/Charles Barkley bit fell apart a little in the middle, and if we were missing anything as an audience,I think it wasSeth Meyers' smiley but swift engineering of moments like that.
And I think that speaks to how we all absorbed Jost's first outing: I really liked his deadpan delivery, but I think we're still missing Meyers, one of the greatest Update anchors ever, for both his writing and his desk presence.Still,I'm optimistic about this team and can't wait to see them settle in duringLena Dunham's episode this week.
What did you guys think of Colin?
