WhenStar Wars: The Force Awakenshit theaters last December,we were blown away by Daisy Ridley's character,Rey.Finally—finally!—we got to see one of the biggest franchises in pop-culture history led by a complex, badass woman. And good news!It looks like that progress isn't just a one-time fluke.TheRogue One: A Star Wars Storytrailer dropped today, and it too has a strong heroine front and center (this time it'sFelicity Jonesas rebel Jyn Erso).
Take a look:
Killer, right?!I mean, justlookat how badass she is:
But,sigh, noteveryoneis as pumped as we are to seeRogue One.Twitter was filled with people complaining thatStar Warsis pushing some sort of feminist agenda.(News flash: Women likeStar Warstoo.Chill out.) We could embed a bunch of tweets that would just make you sad and angry (sangry?),so here's a sampling that basically gets the point across:
Gross.Apparently, there are still some folks out there who think that the franchise should be a boys' club only—even though, last time we checked, having a female lead certainly didn't makeThe Force Awakenssuffer at the box office.采访中Good Morning AmericaaboutThe Force Awakens,J.J.Abrams even acknowledged the false perception that the movies were only for guys—as well as his hope for the franchise's reboot going forward: "I was really hoping that this could be a movie that mothers could take their daughters to...So I'm looking forward to kids seeing this movie and seeing themselves in it and see that they're capable of doing things they could never imagine was possible."
Hear that. So,we'll see you at the theater in December whenRogue Onecomes out!
