As the host and head writer ofSaturday Night Live's Weekend Update,Seth Meyersestablished his reputation as the agent of smart, snarky one liners and sharp political and pop culture commentary—remarking poignantly on everything from Wall Street toJustin Bieber. To nail some of the most ridiculous cultural WTFs home,Meyers took his snark a step further in a segment that he called:Really!?!With Seth Meyers(and sometimes with Amy Poehler, when we were lucky). On one of our favorite renditions,Meyers blasted Kellogg's for dropping Michael Phelps as a spokesman after he was caught smoking pot.("Really,Kellogg's?Marijuana's not consistent with your image?I thought it was totally consistent. You know every one of your mascots is a wild-eyed cartoon character with uncontrollable munchies." HA!).
OnLate Night With Seth Meyers,Seth has got a new—and a bit more in-depth—version of Really?!?called A Closer Look, and last night's segment featured an epic takedown of our country's inability to catch up with the rest of the world when it comes to parental leave. It makes it all the more endearing—and understandable—because Meyers just became a father himself a little over a week ago!
"The United States is the only major developed nation that doesn't guarantee paid family leave for all its citizens," he says."That's bad for everyone.Bad for babies because...you can't just give them your HBO Go password so they can bingeTrue Detectivewhile you're at work...Bad for moms too,it makes them more likely to become depressed....And it's bad for the rest of us.Do you want someone who's been up all night to be driving your bus?Or performing your Lasik?Or hosting your talk show? It's really hard!" says the new dad.Nailed it!
So,applause to Governor Andrew Cuomo for New York's new family leave policy (the fifth state to pass such a law),and bravo to Seth Meyers for so eloquently calling our country out.Meyers for president!
