You may remember our faithful commentor "kristindenae" from back when we featured her in our "Which One of These Ladies Colors Her Hair" game.Well, she wrote in last week and asked how to pull off that whole natural-looking glowing skin thing.Check out her question and my answer, after the jump…
I was just browsing Who What Wear and saw an adorable photo of Whitney Port at the airport looking fresh-faced and lovely as ever.It triggered a realization that when I was in NY this past weekend, lots of girls my age had the whole dewy skin/bare makeup look.I live in Dallas which is the land of MUCH too much (eyeliner,mascara,cleavage...you name it.) Anyway, since I just accepted a job in NYC I figured I should try to master this look.Every time I try to just use a bit of highlighter, bronzer, etc.with no other colors in mix,I just end up looking shiny.Do you have any application techniques or product suggestions?
Disclaimer: This isn't the exact photo of Whitney she's talking about. That shot you can see here. But this picture is just a good example of that "fresh skin" thing,so I threw it on up there anyway.
OK,now on to my answer:
First, congrats,Kristin! That's so exciting! And I know what you mean—getting the "dewy" look is tricky.Unless your skin naturally has an ethereal glow,it's hard to look luminous without heading into disco-ball or greasy territory.Plus, most people think to reach for a bronzer in this situation, which will give you a sort of glow, yes, but not the type you're talking about here. That said,I have three suggestions for you that'll definitely help:
TryElizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream.I can't count the number of times I've had makeup artists mention this product to me as their secret weapon to glowing skin. It's really a moisturizer but it's got this really light sheen to it that's hard to describe. You can smear it on all over and then put just a hint more on your cheekbones and you're good to go.Now,if you're not up for running out and getting a tube,I'll also tell you that I've heard tales of people getting good results using a bit of petroleum jelly on their cheekbones, but since my skin freaks out easily,I've never tried this myself.
Try an illuminating face primer or pearly highlighter under a super-sheer tinted moisturizer. The first part of this trick is to find a product that is pearly rather than shimmery (there are a few in this round up here)—you're not going for sparkly here, just luminous. And it's important to wear a tinted moisturizer over top so the pearl peeks through the color the way it would if the glow was coming from your own skin.
Eat lots of omega-3 fatty acids (like found in nuts and salmon) and anti-oxidants (for a good list, click here). Both of these things are total radiance-boosters that work a lot faster than you might think—check out Petra's story about the carrot soup that made her skin look amazingin just a couple of days.
Good luck,Kristin!Let me know how it goes!
